A New Chapter: The Heirloom Workshop

Sewing is a skill that was once passed down from generation to generation—a skill taught out of necessity, but one that became so much more than that.

For generations, mothers taught their daughters how to mend, create, and make something with their own two hands. Somewhere along the way, as we entered a world of fast fashion and overconsumption, this once-common skill slowly became forgotten. And now, for many, sewing has become a hobby rather than a necessity.

I grew up watching my mom sew and learning from her along the way. Now, with daughters of my own, I’m especially grateful to have learned this skill—because I get to pass it down to them, too. And hopefully, one day, they’ll pass it down to their own children.

When we created Rooty and Friends, our intention was always to create true heirlooms—pieces made slowly, by hand, with intention and care. Things that could be cherished, loved, and eventually passed down.

But starting this small business opened our eyes to something we hadn’t fully realized before: there are so many mothers just like us who want to learn to sew and create heirlooms for their own children. They want to make something with their hands. They want to learn the skill. They just don’t know where to begin.

And that’s why we created the Heirloom Workshop.

A place where we’ll share what we’ve learned about sewing and creating meaningful pieces for your family—especially if you were never taught.

We’ll be sharing sewing patterns, tutorials, helpful tips and tricks, and everything we’ve learned along the way to help you feel confident sitting down at your sewing machine and creating something of your own.

Because we believe these skills are worth bringing back.

Worth teaching our children.

Worth passing down.

And worth preserving for generations to come.

If you’re ready to bring this lost skill back into your own family, follow along. We can’t wait to teach you. 🤍

Be on the lookout for pattern release dates coming very soon!
